Welcome to Waveart, the seascape gallery of wave artist Matthew Hedges. Here you can view my latest paintings and acquire the perfect work of art for your collection.
“My intimacy with the ocean began in 1992 when my desire to paint the sea was ignited by winter storms at Kynance Cove. After four years of study at Falmouth College of Art I had become very at ease working with gouache which is the medium I still use today. Then as an emerging painter I displayed my work in local galleries and had solo exhibitions at Trelowarren. For about 2 years I experimented with pastels combined with colour pencils for added detail. These were rendered on a paper which was never white (but which is either grey, navy, olive or brown) and has a rough texture.
From the deep blue sea to the foamy sunrise, I aim to capture the texture and detail of the breaking wave. In every painting I like to convey feeling and emotion and what it must feel like to surf that wave! Paint is applied boldly and overlaid with razor sharp brush strokes. Sometimes I’ll work in oil on canvas which makes a refreshing change.”
Born in London and raised in Cornwall I excelled in drawing and painting from an early age. I am neither Cornish nor drawn to the county by ’the light’... but arrived as a boy when my parents bought a village shop.
When you have a moment I invite you to check in from time to time to see new work. Thanks for dropping by and I hope you enjoy your visit.
